Open Fire Prohibition Update – Effective July 16, 2026
July 14, 2026
The District of Metchosin Fire Department wishes to advise residents that the BC Wildfire Service has expanded open fire restrictions within the Coastal Fire Centre.
Effective at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Category 1 campfires will be prohibited throughout the District of Metchosin and most of the Coastal Fire Centre.
In addition:
- Category 2 open fires remain prohibited.
- Category 3 open fires remain prohibited.
These prohibitions have been implemented by the BC Wildfire Service to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and to enhance public safety as fire danger conditions continue across the province.
While Category 1 campfires will remain permitted in portions of the Campbell River Forest District, North Island Central Coast Forest District, Haida Gwaii Forest District, and Sunshine Coast Forest District, these exemptions do not apply to Metchosin.
What This Means for Metchosin Residents
Beginning July 16 at noon, residents and visitors must not light or maintain Category 1 campfires anywhere within the District of Metchosin.
Residents are also reminded to:
- Properly dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials.
- Avoid parking vehicles or equipment on dry grass or vegetation.
- Use caution when operating equipment that may create sparks.
- Stay informed of current fire restrictions before conducting any outdoor burning.
Anyone who contravenes a fire prohibition may be subject to enforcement action, including fines and cost recovery for wildfire suppression.

If you see smoke or an unattended wildfire, report it immediately by calling:

The current prohibition will remain in effect until October 31, 2026, or until rescinded by the BC Wildfire Service.
