BACKCOUNTRY FIRE SAFETY – PLEASE BE CAREFUL

BACKCOUNTRY FIRE SAFETY – PLEASE BE CAREFUL

Metchosin Fire crews are currently responding to multiple small fires around the trail system off Neild Road.

While the exact causes of these fires have not been confirmed, human-caused ignition sources can include discarded smoking materials, improperly extinguished fires, hot vehicle or ATV components, and sparks from equipment operating in dry vegetation.

With conditions remaining extremely dry, a small ignition can quickly become a serious wildfire. If you are heading into the backcountry:

  • Do not discard cigarettes or smoking materials.
  • Use extreme caution with ATVs and dirt bikes and avoid riding through dry grass or areas where hot components could ignite vegetation.
  • Fires remain prohibited in all areas of Metchosin.
  • Report any smoke or fire immediately by calling 9-1-1.
  • Stay on established trails and follow all current fire restrictions and area closures.

A moment of carelessness can put our community, forests and firefighters at risk.

Please help us prevent the next fire.
